The watercolor of heads of lettuce in a bushel basket by Jean Cole (no relation) that hung in our kitchen many years came from a trip to Colorado to pick up Chris and his friend Jonah Gerlock from their summer “Smart Kids School” as they called it. The Colorado open water color competition was on when we dropped them off home some weeks before and we were drawn to the lettuce textures and corrugations. Before we went back to pick them up, I called the water color society, found it had not sold, got the name of Jean Cole and arranged to meet her and see it again. We loved it even more, paid $800 plus shipping and installed it in Pam’s kitchen where it has been a delight.
