Buffalo Rifle

Buffalo rifle 59” octagonal barrel. Transitional form of cap and ball timing mechanism. About 1830’s. Bartholemew Malan bought it. One of the proud moments in the life of 17 year old G. H. Malan was beating a man with a new Browning rifle in a shooting match—target a Morgan dime—in about 1896. Note the marks of the ? tarred ropes used to cure the wood on the stock. The maker put his name below the cap ignition area as ASHM—the rest is below the radiator hose clasp to hold it in place.
